People’s writing tends to be more complicated than their speech. Even people who speak clearly and directly often write in a style that is more convoluted than it need be. On top of this, people are generally wary of writing in a simple, straightforward style in case others consider them to be inexpert or naive.

At Simply Put we believe that all writing should be clear and simple, even when it is dealing with complex ideas or scenarios. We believe that this is even more important when writing is addressed to the general public, where a complicated style will exclude a large proportion of the readers it is trying to reach.

But writing simply and clearly is not easy, for a number of reasons:

• There is no one way to write that will work with all people all the time; we need to be able to adapt how we write to suit our purpose and our readership
• It is hard to write in a way that is universally accessible while keeping hold of the freshness, the energy and the flair that for many people are as important as accessibility

At Simply Put we offer short-term or longer-term consultancy in this area. For short-term consultancy, we work alongside you on individual documents that are causing you difficulty, or rewrite them for you.

For longer-term consultancies we develop writing and design guidelines, provide training for staff involved in writing, or project manage the production of materials.
